Mental and physical symptoms of anxiety.

What is anxiety?

Anxiety can affect people differently. While some anxiety is normal and even beneficial, chronic anxiety can leave you feeling powerless and exhausted.

To start off, let’s differentiate between fear and anxiety. Fear is a reaction to a real or perceived threat. Anxiety is the anticipation of something that may or may not happen in the future. Anxiety and fear are commonly experienced by everyone from time to time.

So, what makes day-to-day worrying different from an anxiety disorder? Worrying and fears that become constant, excessive, difficult to control, and last for a longer period of time are often associated with anxiety disorders. These feelings can be extremely upsetting and may interfere with how you function day-to-day. You may avoid situations or people altogether, which can greatly impact your routine or your relationships.

So, What Causes Anxiety?

Anxiety disorders can be caused by many factors including a combination of your genes, your environment, and your body or physiology.

  1. Genetic Factors
    • History of Anxiety
    • History of Other Mental Health Conditions
  2. Environmental Factors
    • Adverse Childhood Experiences
    • Trauma
    • Life Events (work, family, school, financial, relationships, health)
  3. Physiological Factors

When to Seek Help

Keep in mind that anxiety and fear are not always bad things. These uncomfortable emotions activate our “fight or flight” response, which is important for survival. Fear of failure helps motivate us. Overcoming a fear is quite empowering and promotes self-growth. However, when fear becomes “too much” or is interfering with your work, relationships, social plans, or other aspects of your life, it’s time to contact a mental health professional.

Treatment techniques for anxiety may include psychotherapy (“talk therapy”), medication, or both. Working with a therapist allows you to explore underlying causes of anxiety in a safe and supportive environment to help reduce your symptoms. We’ll help you build effective coping skills, teach you relaxation techniques, and offer professional advice to help you manage your anxiety and prevent it from interfering with your ability to function.

Reduce Anxiety with Self-Care

Managing stress is important for keeping an anxiety disorder under control. Self-care practices can reduce the effects of anxiety and may also enhance the benefits of therapy. It’s also important to maintain healthy habits like avoiding too much alcohol and getting enough sleep.
This graphic shows examples of self-care, like get good sleep, set boundaries, eat well, take a social media break, move your body, connect with others, and manage stress. Contact a Hinsdale PTSD Counselor.

Manage your Anxiety With Boundaries

Research shows setting healthy boundaries can reduce your anxiety symptoms by reducing overcommitment, improving your relationships, and lessening your exposure to triggers. Boundaries also allow you to prioritize your needs and protect what you value most.

Shift your Focus To Overcome Anxiety

Triggers of anxiety often include those aspects of our lives that we cannot control. Redirecting your focus on what you can control will reduce symptoms of anxiety and improve your overall well-being. Concentrate on what you can control and let go of the rest!
